Course Overview

Ready to take the next step in your BSL journey? Our Building on Basics course is designed for those who have completed a beginner course and want to grow in confidence and skill. Whether you're returning after a break or looking to reinforce what you’ve learned, this course provides a friendly and supportive space to continue learning.

Over 5 weeks, we’ll explore useful everyday topics including Transport, Time, Money and Dates, and Family and Friends. By the end of the course, you’ll be able to understand and answer questions about a simple 5-minute BSL story—giving you a real boost in confidence and conversational skills.

We believe learning should be fun! Each session is packed with interactive games and engaging activities that help reinforce your understanding in an enjoyable and memorable way.

Practice at your own pace with our exclusive in-house videos, created to support your learning between sessions. And if you miss a week, you can easily catch up online.

  • The Beginners course is excellent preparation for this course, and nothing else is needed!

    Don’t worry if you have forgotten everything from the Beginners course as we will recap anything we need before using it in this course.

    Previous learners have also successfully completed these courses having gained the basics elsewhere and they found the opportunities for in person interaction invaluable.

    To gain the most from this course, you will need to be familiar with some basic vocabulary for topics such as food and drink, numbers, colours, animals, emotions and the weather.

  • The Orchard Room, The Hive, Rayleigh Baptist Church, SS6 7QA.

    There is free parking from 7 pm at the Castle Road Car Park around the corner, a couple of minutes walk away.

    Other options are available for Blue Badge Holders. Please email daniel@signawaybsl.co.uk to discuss as we want to make this course accessible for everyone.

  • The course runs on Wednesday 7:15 - 8:15pm on October 22nd, November 5th, November 12th, November 19th and November 26th. There is no session during October Half Term.

  • Course videos for every week will be released via the WhatsApp group usually within 24 hours of each lesson so you have plenty of time to practice if you would like to before the following week.

    If you do not have access to Whatsapp the videos will be made available to you via other means.

  • This course builds on the foundations of the Beginners course. We cover everyday topics such as Transport, Time, Money and Dates, and Family and Friends.

    You’ll also begin to develop the skills needed to understand and respond to questions about a 5 minute BSL story.

    The course focuses on expanding your vocabulary, improving sentence structure so you can be a confident signer!

  • If you’ve completed a basic introduction to BSL—or just need a refresher after some time away—then yes, this course is for you!

    Building on Basics is designed to help you grow your confidence in a relaxed, supportive environment. It’s perfect if you're comfortable with fingerspelling and simple vocabulary on topics such as food, and are ready to take the next step in your BSL journey.

  • Yes, the course fee covers all instructional materials and resources needed for the duration of the course. This course has no exams.

  • The Beginners course is designed for those with no prior knowledge of sign language, while the Building on Basics course is intended for graduates of the Beginners course or those with some basic understanding of sign language. Participating in this course is the perfect preparation for the Building on Basics course.

  • Please contact the lead instructor Daniel (daniel@signawaybsl.co.uk) to discuss further so we can make sure it is suitable.

  • While we encourage attendance at all sessions to get the most out of the course, we understand that life happens. If you need to miss a session, don't worry! We provide in-house made videos for you to catch up on any missed material.
