Course Overview

Ready to take your BSL skills to the next level? Our Creating Conversation course is designed for learners who have completed Building on Basics or are confident in BSL fundamentals and want to expand their receptive and productive skills in a supportive environment.

Over 5 weeks, you’ll focus on extending conversations and expressing more sophisticated ideas and concepts in British Sign Language. We’ll explore topics such as placement and prepositions, giving directions, hobbies, and work, helping you build confidence in using BSL naturally in everyday conversations.

With 75-minute sessions, you'll benefit from extra practice time and personalised support from our experienced instructors to deepen your understanding and fluency.

We make learning fun! Each session includes interactive games and engaging activities to keep you motivated and reinforce your skills in a dynamic way.

Practice at your own pace with our exclusive in-house videos. If you miss a week, you can catch up with the videos anytime.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ’s)

  • Completing the Building on Basics course is excellent preparation and all you need to take this next step.

    People who have learned the basics in other ways are very welcome and value the ability to ask questions and gain personal insight into the language or as a refresher if you have learnt sign language a while ago.

    You need to be confident with the vocabulary for time, transport, family and friends. If you are unsure whether you are suitable for this course, please email our lead course instructor Daniel (daniel@signawaybsl.co.uk) to discuss further.

  • The course takes place at Room 3, Leigh Community Centre, SS9 1SP. There is parking on nearby roads and a pay and display carpark on Elm Road which is adjacent to the community centre.

  • The course runs on Monday evenings from 7:45 - 9:00 pm on October 20th, November 3rd, November 10th, November 17th and November 24th.

    The course does not run during the October Half Term.

  • Course videos for every week will be released via the WhatsApp group usually within 24 hours of each lesson so you have plenty of time to practice if you would like to before the following week.

    If you do not have access to Whatsapp the videos will be made available to you via other means.

  • What topics does this course cover?

    The course focuses on helping you hold longer, more natural conversations in BSL. Topics include placement and prepositions, hobbies, work, and developing your ability to describe actions and ideas clearly in different situations

  • This course is ideal if you’ve completed Building on Basics and are ready to take your skills further. If you can hold a very short conversation greeting someone and want to become more confident and expressive in BSL, Creating Conversation is your next step.

    It’s also great for learners who’ve had a break and want to reignite their skills in a relaxed and supportive setting.

  • Yes, the course fee covers all instructional materials and resources needed for the duration of the course. This course has no exams.

  • The Building on Basics course is perfect for graduates of the Beginners course or those with a basic understanding of sign language. It focuses on expanding your vocabulary and expressing basic opinions and descriptions.

    On the other hand, our Creating Conversation course takes your skills to the next level. In this course, you'll learn to ask and answer questions with more complex reasons, enhancing your ability to engage in deeper and more meaningful conversations.

  • While we encourage attendance at all sessions to get the most out of the course, we understand that life happens. If you need to miss a session, don't worry! We provide in-house made videos for you to catch up on any missed material.
